Bruce and Ben are On Call

Bruce Willis saves the world--again

Bruce Willis saves the world–again

I’ve always been fascinated by astronomy, by the possibility of “what if” when it comes to outer space. Remember the Bruce Willis movie Armageddon? Where he and Ben Affleck saved the world from an approaching asteroid?

Well, this afternoon Asteroid 2014 DX110 will be passing between the earth and the moon. At 90 feet across, it’s close to the size of a football field and hurtling through space at 33,000 mph. Yikes! But according to NASA’s Near Earth Object Program, we have nothing to worry about. DX110 has about a 1 in 10,000,000 chance of hitting us.

Which is a good thing. Because Ben and Bruce are busy tonight.

BTW, any idea how DX110 got its name? Leave it to those practical people at Smithsonian’s Minor Planet Center to come up with the naming conventions. Asteroid 2014 DX110 was the 110th asteroid discovered this year. The DX signifies which part of the year it was discovered.

  1. It is crazy when we think about what is going on around us in space. Glad we have people keeping an eye on asteroids and other space happenings. Scary to think about- but fascinating too. Thanks for sharign! 🙂

  2. I had no idea. Space is so fascinating, but scary at the same time since anything can happen, things collide, and we’re one planet and solar system out of so many, when astronomic objects come together and fall apart.
